The new satellite owned by Avanti Communications Group, who already partner with Avonline to provide Satellite Broadband to consumers and businesses in the UK, will bring increased speed, higher download volumes and reduced costs opportunities to Avonline’s Avanti customers.

On Friday 26 November at 18.39 GMT the first satellite dedicated to delivering superfast broadband services to Europe was launched on an Ariane 5 rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana. Avanti’s first satellite, called HYLAS 1, was successfully injected into orbit on schedule and once separated from the rocket after 34 minutes of flying, all systems checks showed it to be working correctly.

Avonline currently provide Avanti services to a number of businesses and consumers with specific broadband requirements throughout the UK. It is expected that the new satellite will give speeds of up to 8Mbps download/2Mbps upload, along with an overall performance improvement using a smaller dish. Once the period of testing has been completed to ensure that the new satellite is functioning properly, existing customers will be transferred over to the new satellite over a two month period starting in April 2011. A new smaller dish and modem will be offered to existing customers free of charge. They will also have the option to upgrade their services if they want to take advantage of the higher speeds on offer.

Craig Roberts, Avonline’s Broadband Services Manager, said, “We were delighted for the Avanti team that the launch of HYLAS-1 went smoothly after several years of planning and preparation. We’re also excited about the faster services that will soon be available to our existing and new Avanti customers.”

Eutelsat, which currently provide Avonline’s Tooway service, is also launching its own net-dedicated Ka-band satellite, which will deliver a consumer service of up to 10Mbps download as well as great functionality. Eutelsat’s KA-SAT is due for launch on a Russian Proton rocket on 20 December and should be tested and ready by April 2011.

Craig continued, “With the successful launch of Avanti’s HYLAS-1 and Eutelsat’s planned launch of KA-SAT in a few weeks time, we will soon be able to offer even better value, faster broadband services via satellite across the whole of the UK to homes and businesses who currently cannot access a reliable broadband service.”

Avonline sells a number of Satellite Broadband Services solutions ranging from its best selling Tooway product, with a market leading 3.6Mbps download and 384Kbps upload from £24.99 per month for consumers, through to higher specification bespoke systems for businesses and consumers using Avanti products. With some installed satellite systems now costing less than £200, satellite broadband is quickly becoming the preferred product that delivers fast, reliable, cost-effective broadband to every part of the UK now, well ahead of the major broadband providers who at this stage are just talking about what services may be available to rural communities in the future.

KA-SAT owned by Eutelsat, who already partner with Avonline to provide Satellite Broadband to consumers in the UK via its Tooway service, will bring increased speed, higher download volumes and more functionality as well as reduced cost opportunities to Avonline’s Tooway customers.

The KA-SAT satellite of Eutelsat Communications was successfully launched into orbit by a Proton Breeze M rocket supplied by ILS. Lift-off of Eutelsat’s 6.1 tonne satellite took place on 26 December at 21.51 GMT and after a 9-hour 12-minute flight, the launcher released KA-SAT into geosynchronous transfer orbit. The new satellite, offering a consumer service of up to 10Mbps download, should be tested and ready by April 2011.

Craig Roberts, Avonline’s Broadband Services Manager, said, “We are delighted that KA-SAT has been successfully launched and we’re excited about the faster services and increased functionality that will soon be available to our existing and new Tooway customers.”

This is the second European satellite launch in recent months, the first being Avanti’s HYLAS-1, with both aimed at providing faster broadband services via satellite across the whole of the UK to homes and businesses who currently cannot access a reliable broadband service. KA-SAT, however, is considerably bigger and has a notional capacity to serve up to two million households compared with Hylas’ 300,000.

“As many as 30 million households in Europe are not served at all or get mediocre service,” said Eutelsat CEO Michel de Rosen, “These could be people in the countryside or in the mountains, sometimes not very far from large cities. KA-SAT is an answer to that problem,”

Avonline sells a number of Satellite Broadband Services solutions. It’s best selling product is the Tooway service with a market leading 3.6Mbps download and 384Kbps upload from £24.99 per month for consumers.

Avonline, the UK’s leading satellite broadband services provider, will be selling the new Tooway service, with download speeds of up to 10 Mbps, bringing fast, reliable and affordable broadband services to rural not spots and areas with poor ADSL and mobile broadband coverage.

The commercial contract between Skylogic, Eutelsat Communications’ broadband subsidiary, and Avonline will bring the next generation Tooway service to the UK via the KA-SAT satellite, providing increased speed, higher download volumes and more functionality.

KA-SAT, owned by Eutelsat, which was successfully launched back in December 2010, is the world’s most powerful satellite with a total capacity of more than 70 Gbps. It is due to go into full service mid-2011 providing a Tooway satellite broadband service which will offer download speeds of up to 10 Mbps and uploads speeds of up to 4 Mbps.

Mark Wynn, Avonline’s Managing Director, said, “Avonline has been at the forefront of UK satellite communication solutions for the past 10 years and we are delighted to be the first major UK satellite services provider to sign a contract for the next generation Tooway.”

He continued “This is great news for the 1 in 10 UK households who are currently unable to receive a 2 Mbps broadband connection, and especially for those living in rural areas who will now be able to take advantage of broadband services with similar speeds and prices to their urban counterparts”

Arduino Patacchini, CEO of Skylogic, said, “KA-SAT brings a new era of European satellite communication services which will challenge traditional perceptions about speeds and costs of satellite broadband services. We are delighted to be working with Avonline to help bring our enhanced Tooway services to UK homes”

With its plug and play connectivity, along with its fast download and upload speeds all currently costing less than £200 to install, Tooway is quickly becoming the preferred product that delivers fast, reliable, cost-effective broadband to every part of the UK. With satellite, there is no need to wait years for the major broadband providers who just talk about what services may be available to rural communities in the future.

There are 4 packages available, all providing the same download and upload speeds but with variable levels of data usage. In addition, the Tooway service has the ability to deliver voice over satellite telephony services (VoIP) as well as the added value option of receiving Freesat High Definition digital television services from the same satellite dish.
